Supplements
Lately I have had many of my clients and friends ask my opinion on different supplements and ask for recommendations for nutritional and weight loss products. As a result I have been doing a lot of research on different supplement lines so that I can find something that I feel that I can honestly recommend. Supplements as a whole are not regulated by the FDA or have any testing that is required on them, so I feel very strongly about knowing exactly what you‘re putting in your body and having a product that you can trust. As a result of this research, I have found a line called Advocare that I am very excited about. I have been trying some of the products and really like them, and most of all, I appreciate the extensive research and development that is done on them, a great scientific and medical advisory board (including a sports advisory council which is very exciting to me…. I get to see how these supplements can directly affect your fitness and performance goals!), as well as how they partnered with Informed-Choice, a quality assurance company that tests their products. That means that you and I, as consumers, have the ability to know that what is on the label is actually in the product, which cannot be said about most supplement companies.
As a result of having this information, I now feel like I have some products that I can whole heartedly recommend to you when you ask about them, including high quality multivitamins (which everyone should be taking daily), meal replacement shakes and bars, fat burners, energy drinks, and great overall health products, including omega-3’s, calcium, probiotics, antioxidants, amino acids, etc.
Supplements themselves are not the end-all, be-all of living a healthy life. But they DO accomplish what their name states… they supplement a proper exercise and nutrition program to help you achieve greater and faster results. Knowing that you‘re taking a high-quality product that will help you do this in a safe and healthy manner is a GREAT addition to your program! This leads me to the next thing that I am very excited about.
Advocare has a plan called the 24 day challenge that includes a 10-day herbal cleanse, fiber drink, daily meal replacement drink, energy drink, a vitamin pack, and a fat burner. It comes with specific nutritional guidelines to use throughout the entire plan that are along the same concept as I encourage all my clients to follow – good clean, whole foods: lean proteins, healthy fats, good complex carbohydrates, plenty of water, but with specific guidelines that complement the plan. Sounds great, right? Here’s the BEST part – one of my old colleagues and friends, Jason Wanless, who owns a company called Monster Personal Training and Athletic Conditioning in Idaho just had a group of his clients do this challenge. He had one group follow the challenge, the tailored meal plan, and specific workout program, and another group follow the same meal plans and workout program but without the supplements. Here were their results:
Advocare Group:
- Highest loss: 10 lbs and 6.3% body fat
- Average loss: 7 lbs and 4.4% body fat
Control Group:
- Highest loss: 7 lbs and 3% body fat
- Average loss: 4.7 lbs and 1.7% body fat
As you can see, even with the highest loss, the supplement users lost over TWICE as much body fat in the same amount of time. It’s not just the weight loss, but overall body composition change. When I saw this proof, I knew I wanted to try this challenge myself and make it available to my clients.
